All new smart motorways to be scrapped?

The so called "Smart" Motorways are said to be soon removed from the government building plans due to the lack of safety given to drivers, in addition with given financial pressures! The initial coverage to construct these motorways would of cost over £1 billion, so cancelling these plans will not only save the economic funding but also give the government more time to focus on the general publics confidence with smart motorways through the years to come. Although, a lot of these motorways are already in construction: M56 J6-8 and M6 J21 a-26, which will be completed due to the lack of ability to de-construct these!

Claiming to reduce the amount of injuries on the roads, the smart motorways have already seen the death of 79 people, with an injury rate of 0.06 per billion miles travelled, increasing the common concern whether this scheme is helping! A Study tells us about Jason Mercer and Alexandru Murgeanu who died in 2019 after being hit by a lorry on the M1, putting their trust into the government scheme and stopping inside the lane of a smart motorway.

England's Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, spoke out about this "All drivers deserve to have confidence in the roads they use to get around the country. That’s why last year I pledged to stop the building of all new smart motorways, and today I’m making good on that promise". "Many people across the country rely on driving to get to work, to take their children to school and go about their daily lives and I want them to be able to do so with full confidence that the roads they drive on are safe".
